'In order to keep your plants going through the main growing period you should ensure that all potted plants, including those outdoors are fed at full strength at least once a week. This can, of course, be done by incorporating the feed in your watering regime by using proportionate amounts at every watering. A note of caution though. A number of Fancy Leaf varieties have quite tender root systems and can consequently suffer from the normal liquid feeding regime given to their green leaf brothers. Over-feeding often makes the leaves of Fancy leaf varieties burn at the edges and can even make the plant grow weak and die; this is purely because the roots cannot metabolise the chemicals in the feed. I have found that using a slow release fertiliser in the compost seems the best method for feeding fancy leaf varieties and only using plain water to water the plants at all times seems to do the trick. Replacing a good proportion of the compost each year also seems to benefit them primarily because they are reliant on the feed they are absorbing from the compost.'...
